Wardriving is searching for Wi-Fi wireless networks by moving vehicle. It involves using a car or truck and a Wi-Fi-equipped computer, such as a laptop or a PDA, to detect the networks. It is also known (as of 2002) as "WiLDing" (Wireless Lan Driving, although this term never gained any popularity and is no longer used), originating in the San Francisco Bay Area with the Bay Area Wireless Users Group (BAWUG). It is similar to using a scanner for radio.
Full definition of wardriving at Wikipedia

Wardriving is the illegal use of a network via a portable networking device, usually a laptop equipped with software that detects a network broadcasting through a wireless router. By default, most routers will broadcast their SSID, and will be detectable with a wireless device within range. Unless you are proactive about wireless security, your LAN may be accessible to almost any wireless device in your area. Granted, you probably do not have someone outside your house downloading music via your wireless connection, but it is possible.
