Those files the RIAA is getting all worked up about.

An MP3 is a compression used to dramatically shrink audio files down. MP3s and sharing MP3s became popular with Napster and have since been the target of the Recording Indusrty Association of America because it's easy to upload and download files that are compressed in this manner.

MP3s are data files, so it's easy to rip a new CD into MP3 format for archival purposes.
