Memory is often referred to as RAM, but can also be EEPROM or ROM, which are other types of memory on the motherboard. RAM memory modules are normally upgradable and capable of giving your system more speed and the Operating System doesn't have to rely on the hard drives swap file partition to use as memory when the RAM is exceeded. EEPROM memory is a chip soldered onto the motherboad and can be "flashed" to provide upgraded functionality to a BIOS.
