Firewall
Computer Network Firewall |
A computer network firewall protects or prohibits traffic flowing to and from the PC based on the administrator's setup. Firewalls can be either hardware firewalls or software firewalls.
A Software Firewall is a program that resides on the computer and filters traffic coming and going from the PC. Proper configuration is extremely important. A software firewall can become useless if not setup properly. A good example of a free software firewall is ZoneAlarm.
A typical hardware firewall is a router. The router uses Network Address Translation (NAT) to disguise the internal IP addresses of computers, making it more difficult to be seen from the Internet.
